The Garneau Theatre is a historic movie theatre that opened in 1941 on 109 Street in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Designed by noted Edmonton architect William Blakey, the Garneau is the only remaining theatre of the early modernist style and period in Alberta.

The theatre originally operated independently until it joined with Famous Players in 1941. It closed in late 1990, and reopened in December 1991 under Magic Lantern Theatres who restored it in 1996. Magic Lantern operated the Garneau until June 2011 when it closed. The Garneau became Metro Cinema’s new home in July 2011, and was officially reopened in September 2011.

Garneau Theatre Edmonton

Renting the Metro Cinema can be quite competitive and they recommend booking at-least 2-3 months in advance.

Things to consider while you are going to Metro Cinema

1.) Wheelchair and Mobility Access– As Garneau Theatre is fairly old, there is limited accessibility for those with mobility issues. There are steps separating the lobby and washroom area from the auditorium and from the street. Washroom stalls cannot accommodate a wheelchair.

2.) Hearing Access- Metro Cinema offers the Williams Sound Assistive Listening System for patrons who prefer enhanced listening. You can request a receiver, and either headphones or a t-coil neckloop, from Metro’s box office. They do have limited units available to be signed out thought so make sure to get those in advance.

3.) Subtitled Screenings- Metro Cinema also offers some films with one or more screening with subtitles

4.) Getting to Metro by Bus- The closest bus stop is serviced by the number 9 bus.

5.) Parking- Parking can be a little challenging in this mature neighbourhood as The Garneau Theatre does not have a dedicated parking lot. City of Edmonton street parking is available in the area, and is often free after 6:00pm. There is also parking available in the residential neighbourhood nearby, but be sure to pay attention to all signage, or you may get a ticket.

6.) Amenities- Metro offers a wide range of snacks and popcorn at a concession. Occasionally, there is also beer and wine service in the auditorium.
