Here’s Some Common FAQs we get asked when met in person, on social media or in general.
What Does DESI mean?
So our friend Anand has done some work for us in 2005 by putting a definition for a Desi on UrbanDictionary. The word “Desi” is derived from Sanskrit. Means “one from our country”; a national opposed to a foreign. It Usually refers to people from India, Pakistan, & Bangladesh.
For Indians/Pakistanis/Bengalis abroad, it has become a term that mainly identifies another fellow Indian/Pakistani/Bengali. Yo, that guy must be desi, he’s brown and he’s speaking Punjabi!

What Does YEG mean?
Just like our friend Anand, our other friend Disbandment helped us define YEG in 2015 (pun intended), YEG is the airport code of the Edmonton International Airport. Just like Calgary is YYC, Vancouver is YVR and so on.
A term referring to the city of Edmonton, Canada. Originated from the airport code yeg. Frequently used on Twitter.by Disbandment April 28, 2015 (Urban Dictionary)
YEG + DESI?
Therefore, essential YEGDESI is being referred to as Edmonton Desi’s or Edmonton South Asians, or South Asians in Edmonton, or Punjabis in Edmonton, Indians in Edmonton, Pakistanis in Edmonton, Sikhs in Edmonton, Hindus in Edmonton like a “millions in Edmonton”.

It pains our souls when we see the amount of print media (posters, newspapers, magazine with the kind of information and history about our South Asian existence in Canada is thrown in dumpsters, recycling because it has been read by the current generation so one of the other things we are really passionate about is Content Curation, we want to be the Wikipedia of South Asians in Canada.
